COMMUNITY IMPACT
The YMCA is uniquely suited to meet our community’s health and well-being needs, every day.
The Y is making a difference in the lives of your community.
The YMCA is uniquely suited to meet community needs with initiatives aimed at ending isolation, inspiring youth to thrive, restoring hope and well-being for refugees and immigrants, and removing limits and reimagining opportunities for all. We are focused on the continued and ongoing effort of creating not just physical space, but developmental and emotional well-being opportunities for people who truly need it most.
Community Programs
Since 1958, the YMCA has been an essential part of Greater Arlington, Mansfield and surrounding areas. The current times have exposed critical community issues that require more action from the Y than ever before, particularly with poor mental health, learning gaps and health disparities.
Programs for all! The YMCA offers various adaptive programs from life skills, enrichment, swim and more! Adaptive Swim programs at the Y provide youth and adults with disabilities the chance to learn how to swim in a safe, fun atmosphere. Our Special Friends Program is a day program for adults that provides an environment that fosters learning and enrichment, and encourages participants to make friends.
The Y’s Safety Around Water program teaches children of all ages and from all backgrounds that water can be fun! Classes teach skills for being safe around water and give children confidence with the ultimate goal of saving their life.
The Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA provides evidence-based programming for our community’s health and well-being. Programs and activities promote wellness, reduce risk for disease and help others reclaim their health. These programs and everything else the Y does are in service of making us—our Ys and our communities—better. The result is a community that values health and supports healthy choices.Â
Our Focus on Community Impact
The Y is a cause-driven organization that is for youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility. A strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors.
We are community-centered, bringing people together of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gap in community needs. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive and work tirelessly to mobilize the local community every day to effect lasting, meaningful change.Â
Isolation and loneliness are enduring issues that have been magnified by the pandemic. That’s why the Y continues to unite neighborhoods to build meaningful human relationships through efforts like our Active Older Adults program, well-being calls to seniors, launching our Virtual Wellness Center, an on-demand platform that provides at-home resources to stay healthy and connected.
Through YMCA programs like Special Friends for adults with special needs, Play Days and ESL Classes for underserved communities and minorities, we hope to empower and advance vulnerable populations in our community.
From Food Drives to Mammogram Busses, resources on Anti-Racism and Immigration Services, the Y partners with organizations and businesses to meet the unique needs of our Arlington-Mansfield communities.
Community Services
We know that the Arlington-Mansfield area, and its community needs, look very different than where it was before the pandemic. At the Y, we have redesigned programs to help strengthen our community. Through community health resources, food distribution, ESL classes and more, we are able to help bridge the gaps within our area.
The Y and the Trinity Community Foundation have partnered to provide needed outreach services in our community. Play Days is a day where children in the underserved community of Arlington can enjoy a light breakfast, lunch, and a day just to be a kid and play. This volunteer opportunity asks volunteers to shower love and attention on the children, while playing with them, facilitating games and activities and/or teaching them a new sports skill. They also provide needed information on how to contact community resources to our families in these communities, such as food, rent assistance and other resources that the community would not otherwise have access to. Play Days is a collaboration between the Y, Trinity Community Foundation, Trinity Methodist Church and the Arlington Police Department.
During some of the busiest seasons of the year for families in need: the holidays and back-to-school time, the Y and its members collaborate with local organizations and area school districts to collect and donate critical food supplies, holiday gifts for children and school supplies. Check here for more information on upcoming drives.
Our ESL program excels through its low teacher-student ratio and wealth of immersion opportunities outside of class. As a diverse community, ESL Classes at the Y offer a safe meeting place for students to interact with one another, in an atmosphere that fosters friendships, and promotes self-confidence. Our program offers classes for learners at all levels to improve their abilities in spoken and written English. Classes are held at the Cooper Street YMCA with year-round start dates.
