“Volunteering and working with the Y Special Friends adult program has been a mutually beneficial experience. I thank the YMCA for giving me the opportunity to change lives and have an impact on our community.”
– Karen Sherga, YMCA volunteer
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors.
The Y is a cause for strengthening community, committed every day to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your own neighborhood.
Take Karen Sherga’s volunteer experience, for instance. For several years, Karen has served as a frequent volunteer with the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA Special Friends Program, a program that provides learning, creative activities, and fitness classes for special needs adults ages 18 and above.
She leads cardio drumming, assists with crafts, and jumps in anywhere she’s needed. Her infectious smile and genuine concern for everyone involved in the program makes her an asset and true joy to Special Friends participants, staff and our community. Karen’s dedication to serving the needs of participants in the Special Friends Program truly makes an impact in changing lives and strengthening our community.
