Job Description:

Under the direction of the Day Camp Director, the counselor is responsible for working directly with children. He/she will play an integral role in the development of building strong character values in youth. The staff, at all times, is representative of the philosophy, mission, and goal of the YCMA and its camp program. Staff must strive to work cooperatively with the Camp Director and fellow employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the YMCA.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

 Responsible for supervision and safety of campers at all times
 Keeps an accurate count of children in his/her group at all times
 Responsible for providing diverse and quality program experiences for assigned group of 10-15 campers during camp
 Maintains discipline in assigned group, as well as with other campers as needed, following the discipline policy set in staff training
 Follows YMCA drop-off and pick-up procedures properly
 Communicates with parents about their child’s experience, progress, and concerns
 Prepares and administers activities according to camp schedule
 Works with other staff to implement curriculum and special events
 Implements oral and written instructions
 Reports any incidents, including suspected child abuse, to the Camp Director immediately and completes all necessary paperwork in a timely manner
 Notifies Camp Director of any broken or malfunctioning equipment immediately
 Overall responsibility for maintaining records
 Helps to maintain a neat, clean, and orderly camp atmosphere

Preferred Qualifications:

 Must be at least 18 years old
 High school graduate/GED preferred
 Must be able to attend and complete all required day camp training
 Must have experience working with children ages 5-13
 Ability to swim at least 25 yards, including deep water preferred
 Must be able to communicate respectfully and effectively to superiors, co-workers, children, and parents
 Must have strong conflict management and decision making skills that coincide with YMCA established policies and standards
 Must have the knowledge and ability to respond in emergency situations and keep campers safe
 Able to lift 50 pounds and lift and move equipment and supplies
 Ability to be flexible and adjust to changing work environment
 Must be able to work effectively with a diversity of people, different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and all ages. Interacts regularly with members, volunteers, and staff.
 Must have and maintain current CPR Pro/AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, Child Abuse Prevention, Blood borne Pathogens training, new hire orientation and other trainings required.
