Job Description:

The Lifeguard’s primary goal is to protect the safety of all swimmers and participants by preventing accidents and by responding to a potential emergency quickly and efficiently to minimize the danger of everyone involved. He/she must be alert at all times; be courteous and respectful to all staff and participants. Lifeguards must be able to work a flexible schedule with hours up to 25 hour per week.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

- Use proper lifesaving and lifeguarding skills at all times
- Observe area at all times; knowledge of proper emergency procedures
- Maintain order and discipline among all participants to ensure the comfort of others
- Clear all swimmers from the water in any type of emergency; medical, environmental, etc…
- Keep swimming area clean and ready for inspection at all times; keep all litter picked up
- Stay on post until relieved by another certified lifeguard on duty
- Keep all lifesaving, first aid, and swimming equipment in good repair. Be ready to use equipment and have knowledge of proper use
- Maintain pool chemicals appropriately and test at proper times
- Lock/unlock doors and gates to control entrance and exit of swimmers and participants
- Report all accidents and incidents
- Adhere to risk management and safety practices as outlined by the YMCA of Arlington. Protect the safety of all participants at all times

Required Qualifications:

- Minimum age of 16 years old
- Must have and maintain all required certifications; Lifeguard (YMCA or American Red Cross); CPR/first aid/oxygen administration, child abuse training, bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication, slips, trips and falls, sexual harassment
- Must pass Criminal Background Check
- Must be able to remain alert, with no lapse in consciousness; be in the water for extended periods of time; move to various locations in and out of the water; able to kneel; able to communicate verbally, including projecting ones voice across distances; communicate swiftly and effectively with participants, other lifeguards and YMCA staff; Must read and be familiar with staff aquatics manual; must be able to see, observe, and heal all participants and make sound judgments, even when distracted by noise and activity; be able to lift 40 pounds or more
- Must have reliable transportation
